History of Moama

The history of Moama is a chequered one. The town was established in the mid-1840s, and was originally known as Maiden’s Punt. The town’s first inhabitant was an Englishman, James Maiden, who was sent to prison for seven years in NSW for theft. After being released, he settled in the area, eventually becoming station manager of the Long Swamp, building a punt to cross the Murray River. Three years later, he built a pub and obtained a license for a pub.

In the 1850s, Moama was on the main cattle route from Southern New South Wales to Bendigo. The town was also a major trading centre, with large cattle auctions and big deals being made in the Maiden’s Junction Inn. In 1853, the paddle steamer Mary Ann arrived in the town, foreshadowing the arrival of the river trade and boosting Moama’s fortunes. Unfortunately, the town declined during this time, partly due to competition from the growing city of Echuca.
