St. Francis Dam-Ruins of Collapsed Dam

Visit the site of the former St. Francis Dam to learn about this famous dam disaster in Santa Clarita California. This infamous dam was one of the worst failures of American civil engineering in the 20th century. This disaster led to the second most number of deaths in California history. Now, the ruins are open to the public to explore. Experts offer a tour of the ruins of the once-great structure.

In March 1928, the St. Francis Dam, a concrete gravity dam, collapsed catastrophically. The flood waters swept through the San Francisquito River valley, killing over four hundred people. The dam’s design flaws and defective soil foundation caused the collapse, which is considered one of the worst civil engineering disasters in the history of the United States. A close examination of the structure reveals that the dam had numerous cracks and leaks. However, the engineer, Mulholland, dismissed these as normal.

The collapsed dam was located about 55 miles away from the Pacific Ocean. The only thing that remained of the dam was a pile of concrete rubble. Its middle portion held up for a brief period, but ultimately collapsed. It was not until after dawn that a survey was conducted and more than 500 bodies were recovered. At least 600 people died or were missing. In addition to the victims, over 600 people were displaced due to the disaster.
